  1246.     First you will create the Web Pages database. This database makes it easy to design, store, and manage your Web pages.
  1247.       1.    From the menu bar, choose File - Database - New. The New Database dialog box appears.
  1248.       2.    Select Local in the Server field. The local server saves the database on your hard drive rather than on a Domino server.
  1249.       3.    Enter a title for your database. For example: My Web Pages.

  1251.        As you type a title, Notes Designer adds a name to the File Name field. You can accept this database file name or change it. Database filenames can be up to 8 characters and end with the file extension .nsf.
  1252.       4.    Scroll down the list of templates at the bottom of the dialog box.

  1254.       6.    Click OK. When you open a database for the first time, the document "About This Database" opens. This document contains useful information about the database including its purpose and intended audience. To close the document, press ESC. This brings you to the main view of the Web Pages database.

  1544.     In this step you will create an interactive, threaded discussion forum. Your site visitors can use this forum to share thoughts and ideas. This is a useful way to build a community around your company, product, or service as well as to learn more about your site visitors. You will create the discussion forum using a Notes Designer for Domino template. Notes Designer templates make it a snap to create sophisticated Web sites.
  1545.       1.    Choose File - Database - New. The New Database dialog box appears.
  1546.       2.    Select Local in the server field.
  1547.       3.    Enter a title for your discussion forum database.

  1549.        As you type a title, Notes Designer adds a name to the File Name field. You can accept this database file name or change it. Database filenames can be up to 8 characters and end with the file extension .nsf.
  1550.       4.    Select Discussion R4.6 from the list of templates at the bottom of the dialog box.
  1551.       5.    Click OK. The "About Discussion" document appears.
  1552.       6.    Press ESC to close this document. The main view of the discussion database appears. You can now start your discussion forum by adding the first topic.
  1553.       7.    Click New Main Topic to create a discussion topic in your discussion forum. The discussion topic form appears.
  1554.       8.    Enter a category in the field provided for your first discussion page. Each time a user enters a category, it becomes part of the list of category choices for subsequent users.

  1579.     You can link your Discussion Forum to your Web Pages database so that it is part of your Web site.
  1580.       1.    From the Notes Designer workspace, click the Discussion Forum database once to select it. When you select the database it will remain closed but the text on the icon turns blue.

  1582.       3.    Double-click the Web Pages database to open it.
  1583.       4.    Select your Home page from the list of Web pages.

  1613.     You have a Web site that contains a Home page with links to your Webmaster page, your Company Events page, and an interactive discussion forum. There are a few last things you need to know about managing your Web Pages database.
  1614. Replicas and replication
  1615.     If you have access to a server, you will want to copy the databases you just created to the server. Lotus Notes Designer lets you keep multiple copies of a single database, called replicas, on multiple servers or workstations. Distributing replicas in this way allows a variety of networks in a variety of locations access the same information.
  1616.     Replication is the process of exchanging modifications between copies of the same database. Through replication, Notes makes all of the replicas essentially identical over time. For example, users in one office can make changes to a replica on their server at the same time that users in another office make changes to a replica of the same database on their server. When the servers replicate, each replica is updated with the information from the replica on the other server.
  1617.     Distributed replicas can also be Web sites hosted on different

  1619.      Domino servers. Replication keeps the data on one site synchronized with other sites that have replica copies of the databases. Users then do not have to depend on one machine when using critical applications over the Internet.  You can set up a Web staging area for designing new pages that is separate from your production site. This way, you can test design changes without affecting your production servers.  When design changes are tested and ready to be released, you can then automatically update the production site by replicating the servers.

  1626. The access control list
  1627.     Every database includes an access control list (ACL), which Notes uses to determine the access level that users and servers have to a database. The access level assigned to users determines the tasks that users can perform on a database or a page, while the access level assigned to servers determines what information within the database the servers can replicate. Database managers and designers should work together to determine the ACL requirements for a database. Only someone with Manager access can create or modify the ACL. Once you create an ACL, you can create one or more roles that you or the designer can then use to refine access to particular views, forms, sections, or fields of a database. For information on the ACL see the

  1631.     The default access of a database created with the Web Pages template is "Reader." Anonymous access is also set to "Reader." This means that the content in a database you create with the Web Pages template is available to anyone who can access your Domino web server with a Notes client. 
  1632.     If you plan to enter confidential information in a database you create using the Web Pages template, change the Default setting in the Access Control List to "No Access" and grant "Reader" access to specific individuals or groups.  You should also change the Anonymous setting in the Access Control List to "No Access" if you enter information in the database that should not be available to all Web browser users.  Give Editor permission to all users who need to create or modify Web page content.

  1634.     Your Web site, powered by Domino, can continue to grow as your company grows. 
  1635.     Remember, the Web site you create using the Web Pages database can be as large or small as you want it to be. Using the linking function of Notes Designer, you can incorporate any number of pages, databases, or even servers.
